Living in the Philippines is hard in itself, but being a College Student? A Scholar? In Manila? And being a part-time tutor? A death wish. Hi, I'm Church and I am a Computer Science student by day, and a tutor by night. I'm like Bruce Wayne, but the only thing we have in common is our love and use of technology.
EVERYDAY NECESSITY
Even though I work a part time job, I’m still just a normal student, although busier and more strict with time management, I still do things the same as every student, I wake up in the morning with my alarms after that, I get up and I immediately check for important notifications on my phone, sometimes while cooking or eating breakfast, after showering and getting ready to leave I update my friends and family when I leave, during transit I either listen to some music or if there is a need to, work on some tasks or study for a subject using my phone or tablet. At school I use my free time to fix schedules, work on tasks, or if I’m free watch videos or play games. Admittedly technology isn’t just part of my routine, it’s my routine itself.
TECH AS MY TEACHER
Before I became the tutor, technology and the internet was my tutor. Everything that I know today, not only in academics, but also how I teach, how I act, and how I present myself has something to do with something I saw online. Whenever I struggle with tasks or whenever I don't get a topic, I try not to panic then open:
YouTube = for online lectures and videos, breakdowns of topics, and study guides.
Google Scholar = for research needs and paper references.
Reddit = for coding problems and troubleshooting.
Notion & Google Drive = for storing notes, slides, and lessons.
Discord = for study sessions and group collaborations.
These platforms help me become the academic achiever I am today and without them? I’d still be staring at my screen wondering why my code doesn’t run.
AS A PRIVATE TUTOR
Typically, a tutor sits besides the people they teach, Me? Not at all. Thanks to modern tools, I can be a tutor to students from anywhere and anytime. Technology didn’t just make my job possible, it also made is much more convenient, flexible, and profitable. I use a lot of tools that encapsulate 90% of my job.
CREATING (Canva)
One of the hardest parts of tutoring online is explaining complex concepts visually, thankfully Canva exists. I use it for:
Lesson slides
Visual Diagrams
Simplified Explanations
Problem Examples
Instead of sending students long and boring documents, I want to give them an aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-read that make learning less intimidating and more visually engaging.
TEACHING (Zoom)
Since I can’t meet my students physically, I heavily rely on whatever online video conferencing apps they currently have access to and they primarily use Zoom. It lets me:
Hold one-on-one tutoring sessions
Share screens for coding walkthroughs
Use the whiteboard feature for problem-solving
Record sessions for students who want replays
It doesn’t matter where I am as long as I have WiFi, class goes on.
COMMUNICATING (Messenger & Email)
For quick reminders or clarifications, Messenger and E-mails are a great way to quickly communicate with my students. I often use them for:
Sending study guides
Answering questions anytime
Giving encouragement or updates
Staying connected consistently
My goal is for my students to not just see me as a tutor, but to see me as a partner in their academic survival.
TRACKING (Google Docs & Sheets)
Progress is key, for me and for my students. I like to keep everything organized through Google Docs and Google Sheets, keeping tabs on:
Student profiles
Grades or improvements
Topics already covered
Future lesson plans
Shared folders for their materials
Technology is not just a tool anymore, it’s the reason I am able to study, work, and stay sane at the same time. It taught me, guided me, and this time I can pass on that information to the next generation. As a student and a private tutor, tech is my lifeline. And honestly? I wouldn’t survive Manila without it.
